Daughter Adopted from Ukraine
The Smith Family
This has been an incredible year for us. In fact, last Christmas we were wondering what this one would bring. Now we know! Her name is Kristina, and she's ten years old.
This year held many surprises and new adventures. After spending a few days in Kiev, we were sent to the city of Kharkov, far on the eastern edge of Eastern Europe, 90 kilometers from the Russian border. It was there, in an orphanage known as Caritas, we met Kristina. It was love at first sight. After conquering a daunting post-Soviet bureaucracy, we went to court in Eastern Europe, where Kristina was declared our daughter. Finally all the requirements of both the Ukrainian and U.S. governments were satisfied, and Kristina arrived home in San Diego on April 6, 2002.
As you can imagine, it has been an adjustment for all. Upon arrival our Russian-speaking daughter proved equal to the challenge. She started school within days, and her rapid acquisition of English as astounded us. We are thrilled with her progress and her unbelievable resiliency. She inspires us daily.
The other amazing bit of news is that Kristina's best friend in the orphanage, Lena, was adopted by our neighbors, the O'Briens. They saw the pictures of Lena we brought back and immediately moved forward with her adoption. Lena arrived on Halloween and now attends the same 4th grade as Kristina. Lena also is making an incredible adjustment. It is heartwarming to know these girls, who have come so far, now live only a few houses apart.
Now you are undoubtedly wondering how Stuart and Jane, after 22 years of marriage are handling the demands of parenthood? The verdict is in... we love it! It's hard to remember or imagine life without Kristina. She really helps us live in the present.
Consider us another of your spectacular success stories. It has been a wonderful year and we look forward to many more!
